It is the dead of winter. In Omaha, Nebraska’s north downtown, homeless men are disappearing. Alex Capstain sees it when no one else does because he lives among them. For nearly two years he has called a doghouse home. After losing everything to a failing economy, he’s working his way off the street one recycled can and odd job at a time. Days away from taking the first big steps toward his dream of indoor living and a reunion with a daughter lost in divorce many years before, he’s beaten, robbed and left for dead. The driver of a church van comes to his rescue. Alex has no way of knowing the ride will put him on a collision course with a monster and the decades-old web of murder, corruption and greed that set him loose on the world.

Little Man Kent Sievers 9780997618914 Books

This is a gritty, richly complex story of a life gone very wrong and one man's desperate struggle to climb back into a semblance of the life he used to know. Alex Capstain has fallen on hard times and has been homeless for a little more than two years. He is intimately familiar with life on the street, shelters, and soup kitchens and discovers something sinister has been happening to some of the homeless population. What unfolds is both hopeful and horrific and the story ends with a poignant twist. One of the best novels I've read this year.

Little Man Kent Sievers 9780997618914 Books Reviews

I can highly recommend this book. Really good
Little Man will take you on a journey from a warm family's embrace, to the frigid world of homelessness, to the depths of a psychopath's relentless vision.

This book is all of the things other readers have mentioned mysterious, perfectly paced, well researched, vivid and suspenseful; but it's also MORE than that. This is a story that scratches at the heart of who we are as a society.

What are we made of? Are we a society of citizens with integrity, who work hard and practice kindness? Or are we a society of plastic people who will go to any length to satisfy our hunger for power?
Good representation of the homeless situation and those that find themselves on the street. Aptly told greed and corruption storylines blend with some bizarre characters to make this an intetesting book.
Kent Seivers puts you right on the mean streets of Omaha's blighted Northside with a collection of street people and their helpers. It's a place you'll never think you'll be until you consider the story that Kent unfolds. A great read!
I gave this book 5 stars but it deserved 10 stars more. This was one of the very best books I've read in a long time. I absolutely hated to see it end. It was so moving and heart wrenching I just couldn't put it down. Fantastic book. This should be on your must read list.
You must read this book! Such passion. You'll really pull for the underdog, hate the corrupt, have compassion for the downtrodden and mentally ill, feel inspired that there are good cops left and enjoy the familiar setting and locations in North Downtown, Omaha! If you get the version, expect a few typos but that doesn't take away from the intensity of this novel. So glad to find this author. Can't wait to read Kent's next offering!
If you like suspense / mystery stories with a sense of place, and that place happens to be Omaha, NE, this is your book. Little Man is an excellent, novel-length send-up of the Akashic "Noir Series" of short story anthologies which are set in various American (and now international) cities. I got hooked on this genre several years ago reading Jon Talton's excellent David Mapstone novels - and this book is every bit as good as those. Author Kent Sievers combines here an honest everyman narrative voice, characters that run the gamut from "genuinely sympathetic, noble and likable mensch" to "utterly base and revulsive sociopath," and a skillfully interwoven set of subplots that will keep you guessing.

But there is more here than meets the eye the characters in Little Man know and observe contemporary American society in some pretty incisive ways. As a photojournalist, Sievers has no doubt seen a bit of life himself, and his characters reflect this in their backstories, attitudes and observations. This is a real page-turner that kept me reading well past bedtime for a few nights - and also troubled me and made me think about the world we live in. Recommended!
